How to Make Sure the Business You're Working With Has Workers Compensation
March 8, 2019
If you’re a contractor or a business that subcontracts work often, it’s important to make sure the contractor you’re working with has Workers Compensation. With Workers Compensation, this will generally cover medical expenses, death benefits, lost wages, and rehabilitation services if someone is hurt on the job.
While asking the contractor for proof of workers compensation insurance is a good first step, it’s often advised to check with the state to make sure they’re covered. To make things easy for you, we’ve created a direct way to check the state of Louisiana Workforce Commission’s database. Each state has a similar database you can use to check a company’s workers compensation status.
This database is a great tool to fight against Certificate of Insurance fraud. By checking the database, you don’t have to rely on a Certificate of Insurance that could have been issued months ago and long since canceled. This tool will also come in handy during audit time when your Workers Compensation provider asks for proof of coverage for any contractors you worked with. If you can’t prove the contractor you worked with had Workers Compensation during the time of work then you will be on the hook for the full cost of the coverage for this period.
